TO ALL INCOMING GRADE 9 LITERATURE STUDENTS...

GREETINGS!

Here's your last and final summer blog to respond to in connection with the story "The Count Of Monte Cristo"...in case this is the book you are currently reading...

PHATIC COMMUNICATION: Exchanges or conversation designed primarily not to transmit information, but rather to reinforce social bonds, signal the beginning or end of a conversation, or engage in ritual activities. For instance, if we pass a stranger in the hallway and say, "Hi, howya doing?" and pass on after a nod, the linguistic exchange was not an actual request for data, but merely a politeness acknowledging the other's presence. Similarly, "thanks for stopping by" or "you're welcome, come again" are all social lubricants to ease the transition to and from ritual activity rather than attempts at factual communication. Phatic communication is the term for this phenomenon.

"Focusing on any scene from this story, what good and clear example of a PHATIC COMMUNICATION can you give based on the given definition on top? Within the entire story, there are good examples to support this concept of phatic communication, which is why this posting is going to be another "first-come, first serve basis only" posting---this means that once an example has already been given, as usual, it cannot be used by anyone else. Please make sure to read the postings first before you put your own blog so that you will not end up wasting your time...?!"

That's All Folks...! Take care and be safe always. I cannot wait to see ALL of you next week---BE READY FOR ME! STUDY-STUDY-STUDY...but do not neglect to enjoy your final days of vacation too...! Oh, and by the way, we are having our Literary Terms Test next week, our Novel Tests, and two to three Paragraph Writing Tests. Remember...next week marks the first day of the rest of your life in Grade 9 with me...CIAO!!!

Page 70, "Hallo, decapitator, guardian of the State, Brutus." This is when one of the guard in Chateau D'If greet the another. This is a phatic communication because the person was just greeting the other man without asking for any information.

James 9C:
page 232: "Come in, come in! You wielder of the terrible pen!" said Albert, rising and advancing to meet the young man.
This is a phatic communication because Albert was greeting Beauchamp, a formidable journalist and the terror of the French Government. that is why Albert call him "wielder of the terrible pen".

James 9C (second post)
"Good morning, Lucien! Good morning!" said Albert.
This is also a phatic communication because Albert was greeting one of his friends, Lucien Debray.

"Ah! This is my mother!"
"Ah! good heavens, madame!" said the count,"are you unwell, or is it the heat of the room that affects you?"
"Are you ill, mother?"
"No,"returned she,"but I feel some emotion......"
"I owe to you the life of my son, and for this I bless you. Now I thank you for the pleasure you give me in thus affording me the opportunity of thanking you as I have blessed you, from the bottom of my heart."

This is when count of monte cristo(Edmond Dantes) met his fiance in former times with her son Albert.

This is a phatic communication because they were greeting each other, in acknowledgement of count of monte cristo's help.

Pg.694 in the chapter 'The Insult' when Albert walk to the box of Monte Cristo in the opera for asking an expanation on the dishonour of his family. Monte Cristo greet him by saying "Well, my cavalier has attained his object. Good-evening, M. de Morcerf." That is one phatic communication because at that moment Monte Cristo knew that Albert was angry and he won't be intending to reply back as 'good morning count' or something like that. Monte Cristo said that because of social politeness and also not expecting an answer from Albert.

In the last page of the chapter 'Father and Daughter' (Pg.738) When Eugenie wanted to leave because the conversation has ended she said while rising up "Is the conference ended?" That's a phatic communication. Eugenie instead of walking out the room when the conversation has settled had stated that question without really wanting an answer, she already rised whiling saying it. That question is like a social question to state that she was going to leave.

When Monte Cristo give orders to Bertuccio for the house and decorations by "you know my flavor", Bertuccio accepted the order without asking any other things.

This is a phatic communication because Bertuccio answered and accepted the order without asking further information.

‘Monsieur,’ said Morrel, whose uneasiness was increased by this examination, ‘you wish to speak to me?’
‘Yes, monsieur; you are aware from whom I come?’
‘The house of Thomson & French; at least, so my cashier tells me.’ (pg.199)

This is when Morrel starts his conversation with the guy from Thomson and French. In the last sentence, we see that he is already informed by the cashier that this guy came to see him, but still asked if he wish to speak to him anyway. The purpose for that would be to start the conversation, and therefore, makes it a phatic communication.

On the first page of the story, in the first conversation, M. Morrel started talking to Dantes by saying ‘Ah, is it you Dantes?’. Morrel already knew who he was going to talk to, or else he wouldn’t be talking to that person in the beginning, but said that just so he could start a conversation.

in Chapter 1, page 8, where it wrote: "ah, it's ypu, Dantes" the man in the boat cried.

This is a phatic communication.

DEMI 9A
"Hallo, Catalan! Hallo, Fernand! where are you running to?"
exclaimed a voice.
This is a example of phatic communication because the ytoung man doesn't need a hallo, it is just for starting but not a really useful word. He may could just start with his question...

"His wife!" said Caderousse; "why, how fast you go on,
father Dantes; she is not his wife yet, as it seems to me."
Caderousse could not say 'his wife' then add a no use say it doesn't seems to me. It is more excrescent...

"Good afternoon, Albert," said Monte Cristo. "I hope you are well!"
"I've not come here to exange false words of politeness and friendship," replied Albert. "I've come to demand an explanation."

This is after the marriage engagement between Eugenie Danglars and Albert Morcerf was broken off when the Count Morcerf was disgraced. Then he found out that it is Monte Cristo who caused his father's disgraced.

This is a phatic communication because monte cristo was greeting Albert by saying "good afternoon" and "i hope you are well" to start a conversation.(not really about health).

"Ah, it is you, Baron," said he.
"Why do you call me Baron?" returned Danglars. "You know quite well I care nothing for my title, do you not?"

In this scene, Count is just greeting Danglears
